Essay on Greenhouse Effect

Greenhouse Effect Essay/ Composition: In our day to day life, we are experiencing a new kind of problem. Our environment is facing a new type of pollution. The greenhouse effect is one of them. The greenhouse effect is the gradual warming of the air surrounding the earth as a result of heat being trapped by environmental pollution. The causes of the greenhouse effect are many. The destruction and cutting down of tropical rain forests, vehicles that clog up city streets, the rapid growth of population, the use of chlorofluorocarbons in packaging and manufacturing commercial products, the use of detergents, such as washing powder and washing-up-liquid and various kinds of environmental pollutions are the causes of the greenhouse effect.

Carbon dioxide gas, produced by the burning of fossil fuels and forests and pollutants such as methane and chlorofluorocarbons also causes the greenhouse effect. The effects of the green-house effect are too many to describe in words. Its effect is very devastating and destructive. The effect of the greenhouse is a dangerous threat to mankind's existence and to animal and plant lives. Many climatologists have predicted that by midway through the next century temperatures may have risen by as much as four degrees. This could seriously reduce mankind's ability to grow food, destroy or severely damage wildlife and wilderness. raise sea levels and thereby flood coastal areas and farmland. Our country is very much vulnerable to frequent natural disasters.

Annual visitations of cyclones and floods are routine but nonetheless sudden and fatal in their wild rage. However, the people of Bangladesh are accustomed to cyclones and floods. But another creeping disaster is gathering in fury is the greenhouse effect for which the people are not prepared at all and the state appears to be taking no notice. It is the danger of rising sea levels from the green-house effect. It can wipe away about one-third of Bangladesh and spell disaster for the ecological balance of the entire country.

So if we lose our lands because of the sea rise, our existence as a nation would also be endangered. The more alarming news about Bangladesh is that as a result of the rise of the sea level the lower southern part of the country may one day go underwater. We should encourage people to plant trees more instead of cutting down trees. Govt. should reduce deforestation. Itis a sacred duty of all human beings to prevent the environment from being spoilt.

To make life healthy and comfortable we should keep the environment clean and free from all kinds of pollutions. All the smoke emitting mills, factories, brick-fields should be set up in a planned way. The government should check the alarming rate of population growth. Traffic authority should impose strict traffic roles so that drivers might not produce deafening sound and emit thick pall of black smoke and create traffic clogging. For our existence, we need to add a strong voice to international advocacy for emission and control of CFC that are causing global warming by damaging the Ozone layer. The UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan had made a fervent appeal urging the USA to join other nations in reducing emissions and conserving energy.

Even if we were to stop putting out greenhouse
gases right now, we'd still face decades of warming.
-Jamais Cascio

The process of warming of the troposphere and the earth's surface is called the greenhouse effect. It is due to the gases known as greenhouse gases such as methane, carbon dioxide, ozone, water vapor, etc.
When incoming sunlight is reflected by the earth's surface and atmosphere most of the sunlight is absorbed by the earth. This causes the warming of the earth's surface. As a consequence, earth surface emits IR (Infrared) radiation. Some of these radiation escape to space and some are absorbed by the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This absorbed portion scatter in all directions and again warmth the earth's surface and troposphere. The trap of this heat continues again and again.

Carbon dioxide is the main culprit for the greenhouse effect. Unfortunately, this gas is rapidly rising in the atmosphere due to the unconscious activities of humans. Trees help in absorbing carbon dioxide. But deforestation contributes to the rise in carbon dioxide as trees are being cut down. Rapid industrialization is also responsible for it. Gases that emit from motor vehicles have CO2 and methane. Burning of fossil fuel and plastic elevate CO2 levels in the atmosphere. Moreover, the use of artificial nitrogen in fields by farmers, CFCs (Chlorofluorocarbons) in the refrigerator and air conditioner, water vapors enhance the level of greenhouse gases. The effects of the greenhouse effect are very harmful to the existence of living beings. The surface temperature is increasing day by day which causes global warming.

I always wondered why
somebody doesn't do
something about that. Then I realized I was somebody.
-Lily Tomlin

As a result, the ice caps of the polar regions are melting rapidly. The water level of the sea is rising. It is considered that the coastal countries will go underwater in the next fifty years. The rising of the total area of the desert is also threatening for us. Many species of plants and animals have already been abolished and many of them are on the verge of extinction.

But it is time to save our earth. We should plant more and more trees. Exemplary punishment should apply to illegal woodcutters. The alternative of fossil fuels must figure out. Govt. should ban the industries emitting greenhouse gases and control the emission of CO2. All govt. and non-govt. organizations must come forward.

We have a single mission:
to protect and hand on the planet to the next generation.
-Francois Hollande

If you can do so our beloved earth will survive for a long time.
